Local Campaigns - May 2022
The Scottish local government elections are right around the corner, and this time around we’ve got a record number of Greens and Young Greens standing to become your new Councillors! Look below for informations of Young Greens’ election campaigns, and what you can do in your area to help out!
This is just a taster - there are so many more Young Greens standing for election this year, so if you’re a Green and want to find out what you can do in your local area, get in touch with your Greens branch or Young Greens local area group and they’ll be more than happy to point you to things you can do to help!
And most of all, make sure to vote Green as your first preference - local elections use STV, where there’s no such thing as a wasted vote!
Glasgow & West
My name is Anthony Carroll, & I'm running to be the next Green Councillor for the Dennistoun Ward this May. I have been working in Community Development in the North East of Glasgow for the past 7 years on a range of poverty-tackling & environmental projects, & have been supporting our current Green Cllr Kim Long in working to find issues to resolve within Dennistoun over the past 5 years.
The Dennistoun Ward has a great community spirit with thriving local business, but has been cut up by big, polluting roads, like the M8. We can make our communities cleaner & safer like in other parts of Glasgow: its the East End's time to be just as well connected with active travel & accessible public transport as the West End or South Side. But we need a Green voice making that case in Council.
We need as much help as possible to make sure we elect a Green Cllr for the East End of Glasgow, & you can help by either helping giving our leaflets, knocking some doors with us, sticking up a poster, or even just telling your friends to Vote Green no.1 on the 5th May!
After working in restaurants and bars for years and dealing with the exploitative nature of the industry, I was left angry, worn-down but determined to make a change in our society. My breaking point was around the independence referendum and only the greens were campaigning for massive societal change, so I joined up.
Since then, I’ve run campaigns, led the youth wing of the Greens, (almost) got a degree and fought hard with my trade union. Now, I’m taking this experience and this passion into this election to fight for my community to make Govan a more socially, economically, and environmentally fair place to live.
Lothian
I’m Ben Parker and I am the Green candidate for Morningside ward in Edinburgh for the local elections in 2022. Morningside ward covers Marchmont, Bruntsfield and Polwarth around the university / Meadows / canal area, and also Merchiston, Morningside and Greenbank further in the south of the city. This part of the city is special because of the different local high streets and abundance of Green space all around - from the Meadows and Astley Ainslie site, to Blackford Hill and the Hermitage / Braid.
I have lived in Edinburgh since 2015 when I moved here for university. I graduated in 2019 and have been working for a Scotland-wide housing charity ever since. Naturally, I have an interest in housing policy as well as “active travel”, and I am supportive of work to make walking / wheeling / cycling safer for people.
We’ve had a Green councillor elected in Morningside for the past 15 years, so I’m hoping to make it 20 years of Green representation in the ward. There are lots of ways you can get involved - from knocking on doors and delivering newsletters, to supporting with social media or other background “admin” tasks. Please get in touch if you have any time to spare!
Originally from North Lanarkshire, Kayleigh moved to Edinburgh for university and has since worked for Euan’s Guide and Inclusion Scotland. She now works for Lorna Slater, MSP in the Scottish Parliament. In 2021, Kayleigh was elected the Welfare & Conduct Officer for the SGP Women’s Network.
As a caseworker, Kayleigh works and communicates with Edinburgh council daily and helps constituents across the Lothians. She has helped people on housing waiting lists, solved waste issues, advocated for better healthcare provision and raises the voices of those who can’t or perhaps don’t know how.
She is a full-time wheelchair user and advocates for better accessibility for disabled people in all realms of life. Within Forth ward Kayleigh believes there should be better access to warm, safe and affordable homes. She supports 20-minute neighbourhoods and wants people to have access to everything they need in walking, cycling and wheeling distance. Through better active travel this can help people and the planet.
Mid Scotland, Fife, and Central
I’m Amy Smith, Co-convenor of the Scottish Young Greens and I’m standing in Stirling North Ward in the local elections this year. I have lived, worked and studied in Stirling North for the last 6 years so I’ve gotten to know the area really well.
My day job is as a caseworker, which means I see first-hand the difficulties faced by many communities in Stirling - from disjointed local bus services, to dodgy landlords!
Stirling is a fantastic city with a thriving student population and many impressive local enterprises, but it could really benefit from better representation, especially more representation for women and young people.
We came so close to winning this ward in the last election, it is winnable for the Greens but it won’t happen without your help! If you’re passionate about Green issues I would love to have you on my team! Sign-up to volunteer if you can, and make sure you vote Green on May 5th 2022.
I’m Ryan Blackadder, Co-Convenor of the West Fife Greens and I’m delighted to be standing in the beautiful coastal ward of Inverkeithing & Dalgety Bay. Incorporating the scenic villages of North Queensferry and Aberdour, this ward deserves a Green councillor to protect its beaches, its woodlands and its people. My family hail from Inverkeithing and my work on our railway gives me a unique view of all four villages from the rails not just the roads.
The ward is wide-spanning and each area has its own challenges that deserve a Green councillor to take on. Losing the ward’s High School, opportunistic developers ripping a pub from the heart of a community, radioactive beach clean up, ever-growing housing developments and an immediate need to tackle a dangerous quarry – this area needs a Green councillor.
Fife has never had a Green Councillor and it would be such an honour to be the first. It’s evident Scotland is ready for an injection of green policies and the growth of the Scottish Greens has been a refreshing change to our political landscape, now we need to extend this to our local councils. If you’re able to help our campaign please get in contact via email. The only way we can secure green councillors is through hard work and getting the message out. We need canvassers, newsletters delivered, social media and press work – you name it! We would love to hear from you.
Lewis Campbell - Dunfermline Central
I joined the Greens after the European elections in 2014 whilst at uni and quickly became involved in the Indyref Campaign with St Andrews University Students for Independence. That campaign showed me that a better Scotland was possible and I decided to stand for SGP in the General Election in 2015. After standing for election to Fife Council and the Scottish Parliament, I moved to China where I worked as a PE teacher - I even picked up a bit of the language! I enjoyed my year as a teacher and decided to undertake a PGCE in Geography at Oxford where I became involved in the 2019 General Election campaign for the Green Party of England and Wales.
After finishing up at Oxford, I moved to Qatar to work as a Geography Teacher. I returned to Dunfermline last year and I’m now the candidate for Dunfermline Central – the ward where I grew up! I’m particularly looking forward to using my experience of education in developing policies for our local manifesto. I also think canvassing is the best way to communicate with voters and I’m already getting stuck into it after the Covid hiatus! Every Young Green brings unique experience and knowledge to the party and unlocking that potential is vital to ensure that the party continues to improve and grow.
John Stubbs - Bothwell and Uddingston
My name is John Stubbs and I’m standing in the area where I was born and raised, Bothwell and Uddingston. South Lanarkshire is a beautiful county and an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has been let down by the politics of the status quo for as long as I have been born and can remember. We are campaigning throughout the council area to make the big breakthrough and elect our first Green councillor in South Lanarkshire in May.
I have spent time working in education and business at home and abroad, and have the energy and vision to bring the winds of change that we need to revitalise how we look at local politics and the issues that matter for our communities that we live, play and work in every day.
I speak to people in my area and further afield every day who talk about their priorities - our shared future is always high on the list, but they feel powerless to affect change. That’s why we state that we Think Global Act Local. With change in our local communities and our representation, we can begin to shake the foundations and make the change we desperately need at a national and international level.
Highlands and Islands
I am 24 years old, I have lived in Oban for five years and have lived in Argyll and Bute all my life. I am the Co Convener of the Argyll and Bute Green Party and was a Holyrood list candidate in 2021. I have been involved with several local projects and organisations such as hope kitchen and Time for Change. I am a mother of one and a local business owner in Oban.
I am passionate about protecting our incredible marine ecosystems and enabling small communities to better combat humanities biggest threat, climate change. I am an advocate of greater support for disabled people within the community and for more comprehensive and specialised care for dementia sufferers.
I believe strongly in better integrating Gaelic into Scottish Education, we need to provide more support and resources to those who wish to learn and speak Gaelic.
The housing market in Oban is at an all time high with no signs of falling. The climbing rental prices make it near impossible for students such as myself to stay in Oban. Affordable housing schemes are no longer affordable in Oban and haven’t been for some time. If we want to encourage our youth to stay local and take advantage of our wonderful colleges and universities, we must address the housing market.
South Scotland
I’m Cameron Garrett, 19, from Annan in Dumfries and Galloway. This year I will be representing the party in Annandale South, as one of the youngest candidates standing for election in the country. I have built strong relations in the community, having worked with an expanding Annan-based enterprise for 12 months.
It's really important that we are encouraging young people into politics, especially engaging them at a local council level. I'm proud to be standing for council as a Scottish Young Green, putting young people at the heart of decision making in our community. In addition to this, I am proud to be standing as a green candidate that pledges to serve the whole community.
I am someone who will work with people from every corner of society in championing them and promoting their causes. Dumfries and Galloway council must listen to young people more on what they want from their education and work harder on tackling inequality in attainment and job prospects, in addition to other challenges facing young people in the region. We are facing a cost of living crisis, a lack of affordable and reliable transport and limited further education provision in Dumfries and Galloway which is driving students away. I want to change that.
