Local Groups
Local Area Groups (sometimes referred to as branches) are groups of the SYG that operate within a specific geographic area, representing one or more Holyrood parliament regions (i.e, those used for the list vote.) The Constitution defines how Local Area Groups can be formed. No Local Area Group may be formed without following the necessary procedures.
Local Area Groups serve as the main vehicle for SYG activity within their coverage area. All SYG members can hold dual membership of their Local Area Group and the national SYG.
Although the Constitution lays out rules for forming Local Area Groups, it does not specify detailed structures or rules for operating a group. This was deliberately intended to allow Local Area Groups to be organised in ways that best suit their specific situations regarding location and number of active members.
